Liverpool ’s
specialist heart and chest hospital, the Cardiothoracic
Centre, has its own Research Laboratory which provides
a centre for the ongoing programme of research and development.
Although The NHS supports the running costs of the laboratory,
funding for research projects, equipment and salaries for
staff carrying out research have to be found through other
avenues.
In 1998 the Merseybeat Appeal was
set up as a registered charity for the hospital (charity
number 1052813). The Appeal has the specific purpose of
raising funds to support the research programmes within
CTC.
Monies raised by the Merseybeat Appeal are used to:
- develop life-saving research in a wide range of heart
and chest related conditions and treatments;
- pioneer
new techniques;
- purchase equipment to enable research to take place.
The
continuation of cutting-edge work is vital to the development
of cardiothoracic medicine and the future prevention
and treatment of heart and lung disease – ‘Today’s
Research is Tomorrow’s Care’
Red
Dress Campaign
Under the umbrella of the Merseybeat
Appeal, The Red Dress Campaign was launched by the Cardiothoracic
Centre in February 2004.
The campaign aims to raise awareness of the fact that
heart disease is the number one killer of women in the
UK. Money raised for the Red Dress Campaign will be used
to fund gender comparative research at the Cardiothoracic
Centre.
